The average joe only listens to ACCUSATIONS contained in thirty second soundbites, and definately does NOT listen to reasoned defense. That is why dirty campaigning in election years work - because people only hear the dirt.

The average American voter doesn't understand or care about the nuances of the free speech issue in campaign finance. There is a firmly entrenched idea that American politics is bought and paid for, and anything that caters to that entrenched idea is more likely to be believed than any snoozer, channel changing debate on the First Amendment. Dirt sticks, and is hard as hell to wipe off unless you have a snazzier sound bite than your opponent. The First Amendment is not snazzier than "Bush is in the back pockets of Big Business."

That's terribly cynical, but I find it to be 100% true. Elections aren't decided by informed citizens like us, DMA.
If they were, you would actually have real debate on real issues in campaign years.
