IBM choose 8088 for the PC for one reason and one reason only, they could make 8088s in house if they wanted to. And Intel was told it must have a second source unrelated to them and they chose AMD. No AMD, no 8088s in IBM PCs and no monopoly of compatible PC x86 CPUs in later years. Most IBM design engineers wanted 68Ks over x86. So much for vaunted Intel superiority.

Without the IBM PC cash cow, Intel may not even exist now. AMD might have been given the second source contract from Motorola to win IBM. They seem to cooperate well even now.
