You could also say, as IBM (and other large stocks) go, so goes the market. From this perspective, significant news and trends regarding the large stocks move the markets. IMHO, IBM's fundamentals will determine the stock price. The fact that IBM's performance is 3X the S&P500 over the last 5 years would indicate that IBM does not follow the market over the long haul.
