"Needless to say Alaskans don't pay income taxes and not all that many know the state pays residents annually."

While it's true Alaskans don't currently have a state income tax. They do pay there fair share of federal income taxes. Including federal tax on the $1,850.28 that the state paid to every resident last year.

It's not a perfect picnic however. Cost of living is 126% of the national average. Winter is six months long. In spite of all the oil, fuel prices are above national average. Unless you are the largest private land owner in the state, or live in the bush, property taxes are high. Transportation is expensive, you have to fly nearly everywhere.

In spite of all that. Most live in Alaska by choice rather than by chance.
