Intel released the 3000-series (3001, 3002, etc.) in 1974. AMD released the 2901 series in 1975.

AMD's slices were twice as wide (four bits) as Intel's and twice as fast (20 MHz) and drove Intel out of the bipolar logic business. That's why nobody remembers the 3000 series. They were the Itanium of their day.
