Re: Intel already has performance in the bag for this year

It's an almost perfect quote from that brief period when PIII coppermine was out on .18 but Athlon was still on .25.

Remember what happened next?

You might benefit from going back and reading some of the posts from that time. In those days, it was the AMD thread and the Intel thread - there was no mod thread. Particularly amusing are the ones from the Paul and Elmer show (and some others who no longer post) that Athlon on .25 was actually a .25/.18 hybrid, so Athlon on .18 wouldn't be any faster than Athlon on .25.

"What Intel needs is to lower their costs, and push forward with volumes."

But if they do, who's gonna buy???

"AMD can't compete with Intel's level of manufacturing."

hehehe...Who are you kidding???

BMW Re...Personally, I'm glad that Intel can once again claim the fastest CPU, but I think it's mostly irrelevant to the overall picture, since most CPUs are already "fast enough".<<<<<<<

Intel could claim that since the P4 was introduced, as P4 was faster in ghz than any Athlon and all models of XP have been rated even in Quanitspeed one model below Intels top of the line. Certainly it isn't AMD who is keeping Intel from claiming the fastest CPU. Now there is just the little problem of how the magazines, and Web sites rated its performance, or even more critically, P4's price/performance.

What Intel needs is to lower their costs, and push forward with volumes. <<<<<<

Are you trying to say Intel should abandon the big die theory.

AMD can't compete with Intel's level of manufacturing.<<<

AMD can't by itself, but AMD has been adept at taking advantage of strategic partners, and has a very competitive product. I still have the feeling that Yousef is wrong about the foundaries, and that the foundaries, if they keep on their fast growth pace, will surpass Intel in manufacturing quantity, and eventually process technology. My bet is that within five yrs, Intel will be farming out more also.

wbmw,

Personally, I'm glad that Intel can once again claim the fastest CPU

Intel claimed they had the fastest CPU even when it was not true.

BMW,

Re: "Yousef, Intel already has performance in the bag for this year, IMO. "

Looks like you "touched" some AMDroid "sensitive spots". <ggg>

Make It So,

re: What they need is to start transitioning as much of their fabs as possible towards the Northwood shrink on 300mm wafers,
I do not know if you meant it this way buy it sounds like you do not have any confidence in Intel yields.
re: I think that has the prospect of competing against AMD much more than insignificant gains on a few benchmarks that only a few computer enthusiasts read anyway.
you did take that intel's slide about t-bred performing on par with Palomino at the same frequency. <ggggggggg>
Is not it like saying that pIII was and still is far superior chip to p4? And, of course, athlon is better than pIII so draw your own conclusions :-))
re: I'm glad that Intel can once again claim the fastest CPU,
did not you criticize QS because it does not match in performance intel chips with the same frequency as model numbers. And yet you are comparing 2.4 to 2100 rather than 2.1 to 2100..... Make up your mind, please
