Apr 02, 2002 (Communications Today/PBI Media via COMTEX) -- CDMA2000 1X technology is no longer limited to the lower 48 states. Nortel Networks [NT] will upgrade Alaskan mobile operator ACS Wireless' CDMA network with 1X technology under a four-year, $22 million contract also covering deployment of Nortel's Mobile Location Center, which integrates positioning- center and position-determination functions into a common platform.

Nortel is scheduled to begin upgrading Anchorage-based ACS' CDMA network during this quarter. ACS, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alaska Communications Systems [ALSK], is expected to be the state's first mobile operator network to offer 1X coverage.

Toronto-based Nortel will provide ACS with radio, switching and core infrastructure equipment designed to double voice capacity of 2G CDMA networks, and to support data transmission speeds up to 153.6 Kbps. Nortel also is a contractor for 1X deployments in the continental U.S. by Sprint PCS [PCS] and Verizon Wireless.
