The college was wonderful for those who it was right for, and terrible for others. More so, I think, than most colleges. I loved it; I think it was the only college I could have survived at. The idea of sitting and being lectured at appalled me at that age (indeed, still does). The idea of being in a community of learners where I was responsible for my own education and where I was not only entitled but encouraged to challenge and question the tutors was heaven to me.

It also required a special kind of teacher. One of those who came new my first year and was one of my three seminar leaders lasted about six weeks. In practice, he simply couldn't live with a situation where what he said had no more weight because he was a teacher than it would have had if a student had said it, and where he was not the authority, but the book was, and where "because I say so" was a totally unacceptable comment. He either quit or was fired within a few weeks.
