I haven't BOUGHT gold (or sold it) since the late '60s. Goldbuggery is a religion. I'm definitely atheistic on that one. (Actually, I just remembered that's not quite true. Some years ago I bought a gold stock because it was paying something like 25% dividends. Then the company (I don't remember the name) got bought by some other company, the dividends fell, so did the stock, and I jumped on the way down. Still with a profit, though, because of those wonderful dividends.)
