Actually, General Musharraf has set in motion a direction for Pakistan that offers the best hope for ultimate sovereignty and the necessary strength of infrastructure for freedom to flourish.

The Wahhabi radicals are the problem. By routing out the radicals (and their leaders), he is silencing his critics because the mere conviction and ultimate decision to proceed in this direction has left them vulnerable to being included in the route. It is a polarizing policy meant to force a final decision by all of Pakistan's citizens of whether they wish a strong unified and free Pakistan or the quagmire of an externally controlled fragmentation of Pakistan's politics.

Hard to believe that the coup by the General would end up being the best thing that ever happened to Pakistan. I believe the coup was in reality his effort to push the country into the 21st century as a modern nation (his dream). Too much Wahhabi influence was filtering into the military from the ground level grunts up to the mid level officers. The coup appears to be more of one against the House of Saud than of the Constitution of the country. History may consider General Musharraf more akin to our General Washington. We shall see.

Funny how events tend to prove out these thoughts I own.

US President George W. Bush announced a few minutes ago he will send Secretary of State Colin Powell to the Mideast for diplomatic efforts next week. Powell is due to leave Monday on a three-day trip to Germany and Spain for talks with European leaders and with Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov.

In a televised address, Bush condemned terror and called on Israel to begin withdrawal from Palestinian-controlled territories.

"America recognizes Israel's right to defend itself from terror," said Bush. "Yet to lay the foundations of future peace, I ask Israel to halt incursions into Palestinian-controlled areas and begin the withdrawal from those cities it has recently occupied."

Israel must recognize that a Palestinian state must be politically and economically viable, Bush said, and called on Israel to stop "settlement activity in the occupied territories" and retreat to "secure and recognized boundaries."

Bush also charged Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat with not controlling terror, saying he has missed opportunities and failed his own people. "The situation in which he finds himself today is largely of his own makings," he said.

Bush condemned Palestinian terror, saying suicide bombers are murderers, not martyrs. "Blowing yourself up does not help the Palestinian cause," he said. "On the contrary, suicide bombing missions could well blow up the best and only hope of a Palestinian state."

<<some time some people need to live separately, in present circumstances US will have to look at politics of the region and may have to act to calm the situation, I suppose some thing would be worked out to reduce these heightened tensions soon. >>Wednesday, Apr 3, 2002 4:55 PM
