Fair enough. So if there are still significant numbers of Israeli casualties in 6 months then we can agree that the Israeli actions are failing. Or is there some other time period that is suitable?

I don't know the answer to that, Carl. Think of any war in the past, whether low-grade or total. Could you have picked a period and just counted casualties on either side and judged from that alone who was winning? It usually is much more complicated than that.

By the way, one thing I noticed is that the Israelis had to back off of their requirement that there be no negotiations until a week went by without terror activities.

A lot of what Sharon has been doing in the last year amounts to maneuvering for political 'permission' from the United States to strike at the PA as he is now doing, which he regards as an implacable and utterly duplicitous enemy (with excellent cause imo). Conversely, the Arab strategy is to say to the US regarding Israel, you hold him while we punch him. Giving up the 'week of quiet' was part of the maneuvering.
