SKT is counting every individual with a 1xRTT handset as a 1XRTT sub, whether or not they use data services (and upwards of 70% of their subs use data services). That is perfectly legitimate. 1xRTT is a voice and data technology. Now I guess TIM (let's say) could count every one of the million or so subs they have using GPRS handsets as a GPRS sub, whether or not they use GPRS data services ... ... particularly if they do not require a subscription for GPRS services ... ... but maybe that isn't kosher because after all GPRS is a data bearer. There are all sorts of permutations of this and as a consequence it may be darned difficult to get a handle on just how many "GPRS" subs or for that matter how many "1xRTT" subs there are. Korea has a uniform method of reporting this. How about 1xRTT numbers from Leap, MonetMobile, MetroPCS, Bell Mobility, Telesp, Centennial PR, or Zapp? Ooops. I forgot Verizon. If Verizon sells a KWC 2235, which when used as a phone, only has IS-95A circuit-switched data capabilities, and has no 1xRTT packet-switched data capabilities, and the buyer doesn't subscribe "Express Network" is that a "1xRTT" sub, or a cdma sub, or both? What do you think? - Eric -
