Dave,

Good article. Much better than this one: news.com.com
where Intel rep claimed that "Pentium chip has to execute fewer instructions than the Athlon XP".

Dear 5dave22:

Since AXP is marked as fast as a XGHz Tbird and Tbird was slightly faster than P3. Given that P4 performs worse (even NW) than a P3 of the same clock, P4 MHz still overstates (under performs) compared to a Tbird running those speeds. Only in P4 optimal, but not Tbird optimal does P4 come ahead of the ratings. Whenever pre P4 programs are used, P4 runs much slower than a Tbird at that clock. Thus, slower than an AXP QS rating equal to the P4's MHz. How much slower is open to debate. When AXP is used on a DDR333 motherboard (DDRDRAM clock equal to 33MHZ on top of FSB speed (166 (333) = 33 + 133 (266))), many of those 2.4GHz P4 benchmarks fall below an AXP 2100+ even with P4 using RDRAM.

Using a benchmark set of either old programs or equally optimized programs, AXP 2100+ wins even against 2.4GHz P4. On KT333 MBs, it is faster in even a larger group and more margins in those it won. Using the same memory PC2100 at same settings, AXP 2100+ outran the 2.4GHz P4 in even more benchmarks. The P4 has to clock much higher to take the performance crown away from AXP 2100+.
