Taking Belluzzo out of the middle will help things move faster and more in line with each departments' needs.

Sure, why would Microsoft need a President or COO anyway? Without a single point man to take the blame, it's easier for the head of each each business unit to claim that he didn't have any idea that he was deliberately acting in parallel with another in order subvert free markets and quash competition. Don't you think that's why Bill Gates took himself out of the official chain of command?

On the other hand, maybe Belluzzo just realized that his options were never going to be above water because this pig is never going to fly to its old heights, so he's flown the sty on his own.
