re: UMC - AMD JC

Perhaps I was undervaluing the AMD's potential IP contribution. However, I wonder if UMC will really gain (or be interested in) logic designs? I lack the information to fully understand the expanding role of foundries in the semiconductor world and the nature of their relationship to fabless semi cos. Given the high cost of new fabs plus process development for effective yields, the number of actual semiconductor producers would seem to be declining. AMD's JV seems to be a step towards foundries producing more leading edge products (beyond GPU & Via/TMTA MPUs and probably many others I am not aware of).

Another side benefit of the agreement is AMD gaining immediate access to 300mm lines for R&D though I wonder how much this will be useful given that the target fab is two process generations away.
