And it's not impossible that if prosperity lasts long enough, EVERY individual has collected enough bad genes that they cannot survive bad times.

Yup, that's evolution. For the species it may be OK. For the individual with those problem genes....

That's the point, isn't it? It's not about what's best for individuals but for the species, in which case variety is what counts.
