I would have to read the whole Vatican statement before I agreed that Israel was condemned for "revenge attacks." The Catholic Church, like most institutions, is politicized, and has disagreement within the ranks. Unless the Pope is speaking ex cathedra about matters of church doctrine, official Vatican pronouncements are just the opinions of ordinary men, who are fallible.

As for the men who are claiming sanctuary, it's simply unthinkable that they should be forced to withdraw. Priests are not armed, and armed conflict within a church would be an outrage.

I like to joke, but I think it's true, that Jews and Catholics make good lawyers because they both come from religious traditions that exalt legalistic nit-picking. However, this is one of those areas that are not subject to dispute.

The answer, reader, is that the Palestinians want to provoke Israel into attacking a Christian church so that the West goes berserk.

Possibly, but let's face it.. The Israelis wouldn't give much of a damn about striking a mosque which was harboring armed Palestinians, so they realize that they are much safer in a Christian church.
