I think it's very important for AMD to place a minimum number of units into the market each quarter. This keeps demand strong for products from their partners. The returns to scale, and elimination of a single point of failure from high volume are important.

Even if the result is a couple of million of the lower end Durons being sold near or slightly below cost - and I'd guess Duron cost to AMD is around $25 at this point.

Having SiS, Via, Ali, and Nvidia all finding it worthwhile to design and sell into the Socket A market keeps the infrastructure strong.
