Obviously if you are seeking sanctuary you have to lay down your arms. And you have to have a just cause. Even a criminal is entitled to a fair trial, not to be shot in the street by vigilante justice.

In war time, the lines get murky. In war, armed combatants are fair targets.

Is this war, all of a sudden? Or is it vigilante justice? Are the men in the church defenders of their communities? Did the individuals in the church commit murder? Or are they being sought simply because they are armed Palestinian men?

Don't they have a right to have this all sorted out by cooler heads?

Seems to me that there are competing rights here, so the church is within its own rights to protect them. It's like surrendering to a third party. Surrendering to armed, angry Israelis doesn't seem like a very safe thing to do these days.
