It could also be that since P4's are selling and Hammers are not - Gateway wanted to have a product that people would buy. Otherwise they become another screwdriver shop.

AMD uses one socket for Athlon, Athlon XP, Duron, and Athlon MP.

Intel uses differenct sockets for PIII, PIII Xeon, P4, P4 423, P4 Xeon, and Itanium.
