When opening the packet, my mother had tears in her eyes and we all admired the care, with which the unknown American hands packed up everything. Every little piece in the box radiated human warmth. We all felt that people, who were sending these packets, had a heart for the hungry in Europe. Lucia G., the pretty, seventeen years old girl , who has been with us in Pawiak, joined us in the meal, which we had after opening the packets. In everyone of them we found a can of condensed milk, margarine, Corned beef, sugar, cookies, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, drink powder, dried plums, two packages of cigarettes, a package of tobacco, Instant soup. We put all these things on the table and danced overjoyed around it. Then we cooked ourselves a meal. And the whole time we thought how we could send a part of this treasure to Warsaw. ------------------------------- Walter Kempowsky is the author (the echolot operator so to say). The book consists of all kinds of "sounds" (letters, official diplomatic notes, Lageberichte, obituaries, real diaries) that flowed around the world in those days. To refresh the memory: that weekend the 6th army at Stalingrad ceased to exist. Auschwitz was fully operational. Patton was getting ready to cross over to Sicily. and so on... btw One could comment, after reading the above letter, that DJ "is a sucker". Let me add the next line, copying from John Lennon: "but Im not the only one". I hope.
