The thread has not only become Israeli-Palestinian conflict almost 24/7 but something like 22/7 is the Sharon-Netanyahu version of the Israeli side.

Uh, "has become"? I think it's been that way for a while. Which is pretty much in character for any political discussion on SI.

On the news front today, I found this article interesting:

U.S. to Push Harder for Political Solution in Mideast nytimes.com

Kristol's roundup of the usual suspects gets cited, along with some contrary opinion. I liked this part:

White House officials say all the conflicting advice was somewhat liberating for the president by making it easier for him to choose his own course.

"This is a highly passionate issue in which there are deep emotions running on both sides, and there are people who are probably not satisfied on both sides," said Dan Bartlett, one of the president's communications specialists. "Most times when that's the case, it appears you might be doing something right."

Right. Again, the main silver lining I see here is that the confusion will put the big plans for Iraq and beyond on ice for the moment. Which I consider all to the good, given the somewhat wishful nature of the "Democracy for Iraq" line. Kristol's pundits seem plenty happy to push that line concurrently, of course. That's their right. Ghettoization for the West Bank, Democracy for Iraq, we'll show those Arabs nobody pushes W around, except for maybe the bloviating pundits and their curiously synchronized solutions. Bunch of "independent thinkers" there for sure.

Second, this conflict is deeply serious, deeply significant. I don't see any reason to try to out debate one another; I see no reason to issue cutting remarks to every post one disagrees with. The thread has not only become Israeli-Palestinian conflict almost 24/7 but something like 22/7 is the Sharon-Netanyahu version of the Israeli side.

As this progresses, it gets harder and harder to have conversations in which multiple points of view are respected.

I've been concerned about this for some time but I'm not sure how to deal with it...
