Due to some changes in accounting, most of the write offs in mergers have to take place quickly. AOL's 54bb write down is a result of that. These were charges they were supposed to string out over a long period of time that they are now being forced to take this quarter.

But the layoffs will continue for a while. I consider that a "positive" at the start, since the first areas to be hit are accounting and marketing, where there is probably tremendous overlap, and immediate cost savings can be realized.

HWP and old DEC culture wins the battle about January 2004, and the stock will worth about $20

Are you saying that you expect the merged company to be worth $20.00 in 2004?
If so, now would be the perfect time to sell and move your $$$ to one of the other depressed(based on former highs) blue chip tech stocks like INTC, MSFT, etc.
Or do you expect the stock to peak at a level higher than 20, allowing you to get out, prior to a collapse in 2004?

NW-- I think you are optomistic! $20??? Looks like double digits will be a tough fight in the ST as cpq drags hwp down. Agreed,,, hwp/dec cultures will overpower cpq. The good almost never bring others to their level but are usually dragged down to the lowest level. Still, $20??? In 2104? I still think the pop will come but question my predicted $11.50-- now hoping for 10.75.
