Selection events are often rather random and it's not possible to say beforehand what characteristics will be in the survivors. A gene does not have to be beneficial so long as it is not too harmful. Trying to guess scenarios is often called "Just So" stories (after Kipling). I might guess that having no arms would be a disadvantage, but the proof of evolution is in the survivors.
