The "all ears" metaphor is a wonderful self parody.

No, I don't have any answers. I only mean to point out that the path Sharon and the present cabinet has chosen is extremely unlikely to produce a moderate Palestinian leadership eager to negotiate with him. It is most likely to produce a population of almost the very opposite: more likely to produce a more militant leadership (whether Arafat remains or he is replaced by some other faction); one that has much less latitude to compromise with any Israeli govt; and one in which Hamas et al have far greater legitimacy than they did three weeks ago.

But I don't think Sharon's aim is to increase the prospects for negotiation. His aims appear to be to reoccupy the West Bank and Gaza. That will make Israel even more vulnerable.
