The scenario that probably really gives Israel pause is one in which the Palestinians have a state but Hamas continues it's attacks from the comparative safety of another state.

I agree. My own view is that the only way to get to more security is to begin a process of delegitimizing Hamas et al. I don't see any other way. I have no better idea than anyone else I've read as to just how to do that.

I think the present focus on destroying the infrastructure (and the way it is being carried out) will, likely, produce a short term reduction in suicide bombing. But I think the longer term result will be less security for Israel rather than more. Both because it further legitimates Hamas et al and legitimizes arrangements with other groups such as Al-Qaida.

I don't like the prospect of all this. And I recognize it is not an answer; only a critique of one path. But, again, I don't see an answer.
