The old VW beatle was reliable in comparison to American cars and certainly in comparison to French cars of the time; the new beatle is not nearly as good as, say, a Toyota, but it's not bad. Maybe I am prejudiced because I have ridden in one with a turbo, and it carried four people comfortaly and jumped out ahead of most everything else.
