See my other post. From what I understand the water did pour over the straits of Gibraltar in a Niagara like way. And the same happened to raise th Black Sea level at the end of the last Ice Age.

The geological footprints indicate a catastrophic event when the straights of Bosporus got punched through - if I remember right, the water rushing in from the west (i.e. from the Mediteranean side)
