I quoted 'hate' because there is clearly a tone of disrespect to say the least. I think this is true of any who practice a scientific disciple. I feel that way about computers. I'm surprised that anyone is able to use their computer because what I see indicates that most people only use a fraction of their computer's power. I look at how superficial most people's knowledge is and they find, usually, the easiest path and learn only that.

It used to bug me that non-technical people could give you a treatise on their dog, but hadn't a clue as to how their car worked. If you rank this knowledge it is obvious that Fido, in terms of survival, is more likely best able to serve you as an entre in times of crisis where as your car could make all the difference.

I think of mysticism as a shortcut to knowledge. The problem is that the track record for it is checkered. I would not relegate my most important daily tasks to mysticism, but as you indicated, it has a place in my personal life as a gap filler. I think that is the function of a deity anyway, to fill the vacuum that nature abhors.
