Actually, I made that point earlier- -that once sentience is achieved, evolution becomes more than just genomes. And that allows survival and breeding of individuals who under "natural" conditions would be not survive. And if for some reason civilization is lost, a lot of individuals who previously did at least reasonably well cannot then survive. If the "soft" conditions of civilization have allowed bad genes to spread widely, the whole species may be at risk.
