In order to keep my Windows PC compatible with Microsoft's other products like Office, and keep it compatible with Microsoft's latest onslaughts against open-standard network protocols (i.e. in order to surf the web), I have to upgrade my PC much more often than my car. This is ironic because the car is subject to salt, rust, high temperatures, moving parts, and the occasional neighborhood cat who finds its warmth comforting, while software is a collection of bits that is impervious to the elements.

In contrast, I can still run plenty of apps that I bought in 1984 for my first Mac 128K. Even my old Mac MIDI sequencer that directly accesses the Mac's serial chip still runs, although it politely reports that it finds it difficult to find the serial chip.
