>> Arafat hasn't shown any ability to get the streets paved, pick up the garbage and perform other activities we associate with real government. I don't think he is capable of making the same transition to leadership of a country that Menachem Begin did, a leader that was democratically elected by an educated populace. <<

Huey, you're bringing up a totally different subject here. I thought you were just pointing out who Arafat is????
Were you expecting a palestinian state that is run smoothly? They don't even have a country? How do you expect Arafat to run the country smoothly when Israel is still determining what Palestine can do or can't do?
Do you expect Palestine to educate their own people so that they can elect their leader(s) democratically? I don't know how you can expect them to run a country if they can even have their own country.
The last point I want to make is, that no matter how other leaders are elected, Arafat was elected by the palestinian. And if the Israelis or anyone want to see him gone, they could easily do that, but don't predict the outcome.
Arafat doesn't have all the controls he should have, but if he is gone there won't be anyone else who can "bridge" to all the palestinian factions.

There are lot more to pick on Palestinian topic, but I rather go read CSCO investment opinions. So, this is my last one on this topic.
