On one of those links I saw that it may have taken place over 100s of thousands of years but there may have been several fillings and emptyings in that time period. Change can happen very fast in nature, it doesn't have to be so slow. For example if an asteroid just happens to run into the Earth, or a volcanic eruption of Krakatoa plus scale....
