If I were writing an essay on what it means to be a conservative, I would start with the marketplace--capitalism, the marketplace of ideas and culture, the marketplace of public participation also known as liberal democracy. Laissez faire and public sector across the board. I'd be happy to give a nod to Western tradition as the birthplace of those things, but not make it the be all and end all. And of course a nod to the US founding documents, which codify the role of government vis a vis all this. That's what I think conservatism is about.

There are different points of view in political conservatism. There are some who would readily agree with what I wrote (many older traditionalists, a lot of neoconservatives), but not all. I was primarily giving my take on what is at issue, if not always clearly recognized......
