wbmw,

Compaq is discounting a particular Evo line of notebook computers that contain AMD processors.

To get an order for 15,000 computers, Compaq would have to discout no matter what.

Why choose that line? What incentive is there?

The buyer is the one doing the choosing, if I understand how the system works. What is the incentive for them to offer something that is a "good deal"? The fact that it is a good deal.

I would think that AMD had to have played a part in this decision, else Compaq would have been more prone to promote their existing computer lines (since the point of providing largely discounted products is to promote brand awareness, and Compaq's largest selling products would obviously been among their existing lines).

You must be missing something here. This is not a custom built line. This is one of Compaq's existing lines. They introduced it about 3 months ago, or more.

Joe

What kind of question is that. Don't most OEMs run promotions on new lines to introduce them and create demand. Didn't Dell just use Steve to introduce the $695 Celeron special this XMAS. This was a new line of notebooks for Compaq, and they wanted to get the word out about their new high performance, low cost product. Don't all manufacturers try to do that.
