Raytheon and Northrop Grumman Team for Transportation Security Administration Explosive Detection System/Explosive Trace Detection Contract

SALT LAKE CITY, Apr 5, 2002 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Raytheon Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Daniel P. Burnham and Northrop Grumman Corporation Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Kent Kresa today announced that the two companies have teamed to bid for the Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) Explosive Detection System/Explosive Trace Detection General Contractor program. Proposals are due April 9, 2002, and selection of the winning contractor team is expected by the end of this month.
Burnham and Kresa were at the Salt Lake City International Airport today to inspect the 100 percent baggage screening equipment that Raytheon installed in 45 days in time for the Winter Olympics in February.

The Aviation and Transportation Security Act of 2001 has mandated that explosive detection systems must be deployed and operational at all 438 commercial airports in the United States by Dec. 31, 2002 to screen 100 percent of all checked baggage.

"We believe that experience and commitment are the key discriminators in this pursuit," said Raytheon's Burnham. He pointed out that Raytheon has been the FAA's Security Equipment Integration contractor since 1996 and to date has installed more than 185 explosive detection systems and 630 explosive trace detection systems at more than 50 airports nationwide. "We know what it takes, and, with Northrop Grumman, we have what it takes to do this vital job."

"We are delighted to join with Raytheon in meeting this major national requirement," said Northrop Grumman's Kresa. "We offer tremendous training and installation experience and expertise, which will allow us to swiftly and effectively meet the demanding requirements of the TSA. Dan and I are totally committed to providing the government with the lowest-risk, best-value solution."

Northrop Grumman has performed a similar large-scale deployment for the U.S. Postal Service, the largest in the Postal Service's history. Northrop Grumman has delivered and installed more than 500 sophisticated mail-sorting systems in every state and territory and is currently providing screener training for explosive detection for the FAA across the nation.

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) is an $18 billion, global defense company with its worldwide headquarters in Los Angeles. Northrop Grumman provides technologically advanced, innovative products, services and solutions in defense and commercial electronics, systems integration, information technology and nuclear and non-nuclear shipbuilding and systems.
