I think we tend to recall what annoys us, rather than what annoys other people
just as we tend to interpret things as slights, if we expect them to be slights
or we let things pass, if we know the people involved and know they aren't aiming to harm us, and even better, if we know they agree with us

it is always easy to refrain from insulting people who agree with you
and it is hard to imagine how anyone could be so stupid as to not see something that is so very clear to oneself
until you realize the other guy, and (how many billion people on this planet?) are all doing exactly that about something or other all day every day. I think sometimes the inner amazement some of us feel that the clarity of our position is not immediately seen by the ladies and gentlemen of the other side is taken as evidence of the feeble mindedness of the other side. Since all sides do this about everything, it seems to be a very common thing. You've read the Bush thread- there the two sides of the political spectrum even go so far as to perpetually call each other names. I don't think the religious thing got so heated as to approach anywhere near the level of that sort of thing. And that is good, isn't it?
