But the prices remained very high and the manipulations remained at peak levels until Jeffords switched parties. Within a week after that energy prices dropped dramatically and kept dropping. All of a sudden there was TOO MUCH energy and ask Cheney and Bush themselves stated, there was no available way to increase current energy supply besides a few small measures. This was when Cheney was calling for 1700 new power plants and many more refineries build ASAP. Halliburton and Duke would build many of them of course and reap huge contract profits. Remember, all refineries were supposedly at max output, they claimed natural gas was scarce, and power plants were going full-blast. There was supposedly NO MORE supply and Cheney told us even conservation would not work. Why is Jeffords so relevant? Because the majority party is the one which assigns special investigations. So once the Dems took the Senate the Bush White House and the energy CEO's knew. They'd better take the money and run ASAP. The excuses made by those who contend the energy crisis was market driven defy all logic. And there was at least one whistle-blower who worked at a power plant who said he had been ordered to cut back electric supply during the heat of the crisis. Whether he's testifying or not I don't know. The timing of the energy crisis coincided precisely with the presidential campaign and the massive amounts of soft money the energy companies were giving to Bush. The companies in charge of energy delivery were the exact same ones behind Bush-Cheney and the exact same ones who had the most to gain. Clinton was blind-sided and so was Gore during the election. They simply didn't know what was being engineered and I'm sure it was a closely held (and illegal) secret. Also they depended on the energy business to give them figures, explanations and answers. The energy industry was 100% behind Bush so they were no help. On the contrary. This was indeed the stealth "October surprise" of the election year, a giant ripoff and scare tactic created by a closely-knit bunch of Texans (and a few others) who had one purpose in mind and knew what could be done if conditions were right. Enron of course was a key mastermind as they were the ones who had developed the new energy market theories which were so labyrinthine no reporter or government regulator could make sense of them. Grey Davis only called Ken Lay to please explain how it all worked. Lay just told him "leave it to us". But now Davis knows how his state and others were fleeced, lied to and taken to the cleaners by the Texas bunch. He is furious but needs irrefutable evidence to take this public. I believe this was a giant we'll scratch your back, you scratch ours situation, between friends, Bush-Cheney both being IN the oil business, not to mention Bush Sr., james Baker and all their buddies. This alarming conspiracy (so ahead and laugh but it's true) cost consumers and business tens of billions in the US, a lot more overseas and was just pure gouging. But unlike past gougings this one also had an all-important political purpose. To derail the Clinton economy, give Bush-Cheney an issue they could appear to be the experts on, make environmentalists look naive and wrong-headed and to greatly enrichen BC's principal donors and friends, including the Arabs whom Bush Sr.-Cheney were owed a big debt from the Gulf War. This was payback time (help my son here) and gave the Arabs many tens of billions in windfall profits as well. So everyone won but the consumers, the environment, democracy and of course Gore. Since the election was so close it certainly put Bush in the White House. But so did Ralph Nader so that's a bit of a moot point. All this relates to the energy papers Cheney refuses to turn over. They contain evidence which would be very damaging to Bush and all his cronies. Cheney will stonewall forever on this, as well as cover-up as best he can. This is why when I hear people calling Bush-Cheney moral and ethical I have to laugh. Compared to this scam, Whitewater was a jay-walking offence. And their partied tried to impeach Clinton over that nonsense.
