This hymn, like many others, is a personal testament by one man as to how he found faith and redemption.

I'm happy for him.

I wasn't making any statement on hymns. I was making a statement about the message that humans are wretches and only through God's grace do they have worth. I think a more appropriate statement for a clergyman to make at, say, a high school graduation is, for example, that the graduates have the world before them, they can accomplish great things, and they should use their talents to contribute, not tear down. I don't mind a clergyman speaking at a graduation if that clergyman has the forbearance to avoid sending messages that conflict with the humanistic message I'm trying to plant in my kids. I think that the majority religious should take my religious beliefs seriously and avoid that conflict. There are plenty of messages that they can give that don't challenge my religion that they can offer. I don't want anyone in authority telling my kid he's a wretch. I don't think that's asking too much.
