And it is free trade.......there are countries outside of OPEC such as Russia and Norway that can and do buck OPEC's decisions re oil production and export.

OPEC is a cartel. The fact that it doesn't have 100% of the market under its control hardly makes it an example of free trade.


Tim, I didn't mean to imply that the cartel was an example of free trade but rather the trading of oil is done freely. Its true that OPEC tries to control the price of oil but up until this year, it has had little success, and most believe that its current success is limited. And there are major producers of oil outside the cartel that usually thwart OPEC's best laid plans. Trade in oil may not be free as it is with some other commodities but there is free trade.
