"Either you think Western Civilization trumps everything or you don't"

I probably wasn't making myself clear. <g> At the very least one assumes that he includes the Constitution and the Bill of Rights in his roster of "Western Civilization" values. I don't think liberals hold any less fondness for those values than do conservatives. It would be rather disconcerting to think that half of Americans did not cherish the fundamental values which give then their identity. I think it is trying to stretch a rubber band around a redwood. It is not going to do...

"Conservatives get upset at a challenge to tradition independent of the substance of that tradition. If it's traditional, it's good. If it's a new-fangled idea, it's bad, don't even describe it."

I think that is a misconception. It is an unnatural and forced differentiation of people. The truth is that we are mainly talking about one tradition and a few that derive from it. I speak of religion. Conservatives would like to have government preserve the moral structure which they believe in. However, society has become far too amorphous to allow such a role for government.

Slavery was a tradition, too. Life is a dynamic which must be encountered and renewed. Both liberals and conservatives appreciate that. And they both have traditions of voting against the other...

"No, conservatives support only time honored traditions, never controversial issues?"

Thank you for the wry humour. It was fun...
