I think you are right- the change some seem to want is change back to the ideal that never was, but which they believe was, based on principles that were never really as widely supported as the conservatives think they were (or they wouldn't have changed) but which they think changed for nefarious reasons, and not due to things like national consensus. I think Neo is more sophisticated than the average romantic conservative, but he is still attached to the romantic old time ideals (Mayberry RFD?) he sees as better than everything else. Of course I can't possibly say that is wrong. It just doesn't suit me at all.
