You are quite right in that many folks believe that the gold problem began with the corruption of LBJ. To be sure, there was rampant inflation during his watch at the height of the Vietnam War. The printing press kept on rolling so much that General De Gaulle would not accept U.S. dollars, and soon after that Nixon was forced to delink the US$ from gold.

I recall one summer sometime in the early 1970s when a number of American and other tourists were stranded in Paris and Amsterdam because their American Express credit cards and US$ suddenly became unacceptable there.
