I think if you look honesty at the history of ideas, you will find that daintiness, civility, and decorum have rarely been prominent characteristics of the marketplace of ideas. You want to make good steel, you need a hot fire.

I have nothing at all against a good wrangle, especially if the participants are witty, stylish, and concise.
