That gets us back to the thorny problem of the people who are entwined with their ideas in such a way that an attack, or even a statement that is considered disrespectful to those ideas, becomes an attack or disrespect to the person. I don't know what we do about those people. Ignore them? Move the conversation on around them? Because if we include them they will constantly be bringing up the issues that other people were talking about as ideas, and turning them into personal affronts- which of course personalizes the thread and the discussion.

I don't think we really disagree, though I think we may be defining things differently.

I don't like the namecalling. I'm not offended by it, I just think it's dumb. I want to see arguments with absolutely no holds barred, conducted among articulate, witty people who hold nothing sacred. Uncivility doesn't bother me. Ugliness does.

Of course I rarely get what I want. But I don't think creating a list of sacred cows is going to help.

Thank you.

I'm framing that one.
