I think your point about asymetricality is excellent.

The most defining characteristic of an atheist is the rather bare fact that he or she does not believe in God.

This is an interesting point. I used to think that atheists and agnostics merely 'didn't believe", but i'm beginning to realize that along with that lack of religious belief there often exists anger at religion and those who do believe in God. I've seen this expressed here time and time again as contemptuousness, not only against religion, but against the personality types, emotional maturity and intellectual level of the religious. It has stunned me. Aside from a very few Fundamentalist Christians known to us all here, I've not run across the kind of anger and disdain for secularists that secularists often vent toward believers.
