Furthermore, that logic is totally flawed. They tracked 1-year returns over a 15-year period and found less than 3% appreciated greater than 50% over the course of a year after dropping into single digits.

Why should I be surprised at this? How many stocks appreciate 50% after hitting an arbitrary number? I'd be willing to be you'd get similar results with stocks that dropped below $80 and the odds of them hitting $120 within 1-year.
