Clean-fuel cars. The real problem is political. Carter tried to push clean fuels after the 70's oil embargo but when Reagan came in (backed by big oil and Detroit) he got rid of it all, dismantled solar programs and made fun of environmentalism. People like Rush Limbaugh are still making fun of environmentalism, as if it should be as partisan issue. Clinton wasn't under any pressure to push clean fuel because post Gulf War we had cheap opil for a long time. Don't expect this to continue.

Used to be Big Energy Texas was mostly Democrat but now it's mostly Republican and their favorite sons including our President and Veep are both former oil CEOS. This makes the GOP in bed with/hostage to Big Oil. Until this changes we can't expect major progress.

Big oil will always stand in the way of progress on this front. In this respect they're no better than tobacco companies pushing addiction. Fundamentally they're very bad for our country and national security. This is a big looming issue which will come out in 2004 I hope. Why is this War On terrorism even happening? The roots are as much in our addiction to oil as anythinmg else. Bottomline, we have to gradually kick the habit. Here in California we have good electric car programs but it has to be a national agenda. It has to be heavily subsidized at first. It also has to be embraced by the GOP as well as more liberal Democrats.
