oh, I'd eliminate the regular editorials also, but I don't think that would be noticed. have you ever met anybody who actually reads editorials, except maybe at election time to find out which of the candidates for local sherriff is somewhat less incompetent or corrupt?

As for the influence of the internet, I'm not sure what it will be in the long run. The proliferation of cable news channels has increased the demand for, and hence the supply of, "commentators" of one sort or another. The result, like overexpansion in baseball, has been dilution of the talent pool and a lowering of general quality. But the market is imperfect, since most people read or listen to this stuff not for enlightenment but for entertainment or confirmation of their prejudices. Blogging, by democratizing things still further, is a step up because it removes the pretense that all the talk is anything more than just that. How things will look ten years from now, let alone 20 or 30, is unclear.

<If anything, the rise of bloggers is helpful in providing more of a feedback loop to the punditry. If they have a right to bloviate, perhaps our right to trash their arrogance and stupidity may make them work harder on their copy.>

I value people like you, Hawkmoon, CB [surprised though CB might be], Tekuboi-san and many others, more than the bloviating masses in mainstream media [I'll now look up that word - new to me...].

It's instant feedback on wacko ideas in Bloggerville [I have to look up bloggers too]. There are no monopolies on wacko in this world; there's plenty to go around for all of us.
