Sarid: PM isolated only Israel, not Arafat

By Ha'aretz Service

Leftist opposition leader Yossi Sarid, urging Ariel Sharon to ask himself "how he brought Israel to the point that the whole world is against us," told a special Knesset session Monday that the prime minister's efforts to isolate Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat had backfired completely - isolating only the Jewish state.

As Sharon watched, at one point interrupting Sarid to argue a point of diplomacy, Sarid said Sharon should abandon the "delusion" that Arafat is not the true leader of the Palestinians.

"Whether we like it or not, Yasser Arafat is not only the elected leader of the Palestinian people, he is also the hero of the Palestinian Arab people, and now - because of you - he is more hero than ever," Sarid told the Knesset.

"You wanted to isolate him, but for the time being, Arafat is isolating us. What can we do - Israel is isolated."

Alluding to then-defense minister Sharon's 1982 invasion of Lebanon, Sarid said "You, after all, wanted to institute a new leadership in Lebanon and to establish a new order in Lebanon and in the Middle East, and this did not go over well at all."

He chided Sharon for his oft-stated willingness to make painful concessions for peace, saying of the prime minister's Monday offer to travel anywhere to talk peace with Arab leaders: "It's not enough to talk peace ... peace has to be made, not just talked about."
